Namisol®

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. It is the most common, non-traumatic, neurological disease in young adults in Northern Europe and the USA (approximately 0,85 million patients) and other areas with a temperate climate. The disease is common in people of Caucasian race. Age of onset is typically between 20 and 40 years, and women are more likely to be affected than men. Although the exact cause of MS is unknown, it is thought to be an autoimmune disease, possibly triggered by viral infections, genetic predisposition and environmental factors such as climate.

For decades, preparations of cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) have been employed in the treatment of numerous diseases for applications such as pain treatment, nausea and vomiting, anorexia and spasticity. Today it is estimated that 8% of the patients with MS experience relief of spasms and central pain using medicinal cannabis.

Multiple studies, including double-blind clinical studies among patients with MS, show that Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Dronabinol) is one of the main cannabinoids in cannabis which possesses a therapeutic effect in pain relief. However, due to the lipophilic character of Dronabinol, easy administration with satisfactory pain relief is prevented. Echo Pharmaceuticals is developing a tablet Namisol®.

Namisol® is a tablet containing Dronabinol. Research studies using Namisol® indicated that it can be expected that the unique formulation of Namisol® enables the fast uptake of Dronabinol by the human mucosa.
